Three Dead, Sixteen Injured in Fiery Chain-Reaction Crash on Saddletowne Circle

A serious collision on Saddletowne Circle N.E. in Calgary on October 15, 2026 left three people dead and at least 16 others injured, making it one of the most significant crash scenes Calgary Police had responded to in recent history.

According to police, a Calgary Transit bus travelling along Saddletowne Circle collided with a white vehicle, triggering a chain reaction involving eight vehicles in total, including a second bus that was stationary at a bus stop. The second bus, fuelled by liquid natural gas, caught fire. Three passengers on board were killed. Of those taken to hospital, one person suffered life-altering injuries and one suffered serious injuries. A Calgary Police officer who responded to the scene also sustained minor injuries after approaching the bus as the fire spread.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Collision reconstruction specialists attended the scene, and video footage from nearby businesses is being reviewed as part of the investigation.

Crashes involving city transit vehicles are a reminder of how quickly serious injuries can occur on Alberta roads, and how complicated the legal picture can become when a municipality is involved. Claims against a city follow a different process than claims against a private driver, and notice requirements can apply on a shorter timeline than the standard two-year limitation period.

One thing worth knowing right now: Alberta’s auto insurance system is changing on January 1, 2027. Under the incoming Care-First model, most people will lose the right to sue an at-fault driver for pain and suffering. Collisions that happened before that date are expected to be handled under the current rules, which means anyone injured in this accident or any other recent crash still has options that may not be available after the new year.
